Jean Morlet Chair Series
The "Chaire Jean-Morlet" series is a collection of scientific publications on the research themes of the successive laureates of the Jean Morlet Chair at CIRM.
Right from the outset, the holders of the "Jean Morlet Chair" took residence at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM) in Marseille. Jean Morlet (1931-2007), an engineer working for the oil company ELF, cooperating closely with the physicist Alex Grossman, initiated pioneering studies on the theory of wavelets, thus paving the way for a whole new area of mathematical analysis. The two men met at the CIRM on several occasions in the eigthies and the Marseille premise soon became the stage of the first founding conferences of this theory.
Holders of a Jean Morlet Semester are international leaders in their field employed outside France ; their research project, both original and ambitious, is spread over one semester and thus receives strong support from the CIRM, the university of Aix-Marseille, and the city of Marseille.
In principle, the Chair is not solely restricted to the themes developed by Jean Morlet. Its purpose is to encourage a risk-taking attitude in mathematical sciences and to support the enthusiasm of men and women endeavoring to open up new areas of research in mathematics.
The CIRM: a center for the promotion of international cooperation
Based in the heart of the famous Parc des Calanques, a stunningly beautiful site, the CIRM is one of the most reknowned conference centers for mathematics ; it hosts more than 3500 visitors per year and is bent on opening up to the various disciplines used in mathematical analysis. Managed jointly by SMF (Société Mathématique de France) and the CNRS (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique), the CIRM has been an important meeting point for international mathematical research scientists since 1981. It is dedicated to facilitating exchanges, encouraging mathematical research in interaction with other scientific disciplines, and transfering knowledge and know-how to the younger generations.
This collection is intended for researchers, especially doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows.
This collection has been a co-publication between the SMF and Lecture Notes in Mathematics (Springer) until 2021. From 2022, it will be published by the SMF in Panoramas et Synthèses.
