Position of the SMF board on the recent announcements of OpenAI
On September 8, OpenAI announced that it had resolved the mathematical question concerning the regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. By employing a huge amount of generative AI agents, the company presented a specific forcing mechanism that leads to a solution becoming infinite at some point in space at a given time. Some mathematical Societies have already expressed quite some enthusiasm regarding this answer to one of the Clay Institute's "Millennium Prize Problems."
While this undoubtedly represents a major breakthrough in the field, the board of the French Mathematical Society wishes to draw attention to the ethical issues it raises—such as the misappropriation of existing literature, the high energy and environmental costs, and rumors of coercion—as well as the portrayal of mathematics as a target for bounty hunters. We observe a complete lack of a collective strategy for the future. Although an open letter initiated by 25 Fields Medalists addresses this issue, we still have much work to do collectively to counter the threat that Large Language Models (LLMs) pose to our discipline—specifically, the risk of being drawn into a frenzied race and a pattern of exploitation that endangers our common mathematical culture and, ultimately, human knowledge itself.
