We discuss some of the relations involving Gross and Leopoldt conjectures between the $l$-part of the universal kernel in the $K$-theory of number fields, the Kummer radical of the compositum of $\mathbb {Z}_l$-extensions, and the kernel of the principal $l$-adic absolute values, given by the $l$-adic field theory.
